Furniture
If you are moving into a home and need furniture and other household items, kitchen equipment etc, you may like to consider getting ‘second hand’ or ‘used’ goods. Check out the ideas below:
Auction
This is a public sale of goods, in which prospective buyers bid against each other until the highest price is reached. You can get all sorts of things such as furniture, pots and pans, electrical items, garden equipment, etc. You decide how much you want to pay. To see how this works, go to a local auction (eg: John Milne, see below) and watch.
Charity shops
There are many charity shops in every town. They sell small household items such as crockery, as well as clothes. Sometimes you can find curtains and bed linen, towels etc.
- British Heart Foundation shop selling second hand furniture and electrical items
- Up My Street - Charity Shops in Aberdeen
- Yell.com - Click on the link below and enter ‘charity shops’ + your local town or post code.
Freecycle
There is an active group in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. You need to ‘sign up’ and give something away before you can ‘apply’ for some of the (free) items given away by other people.
Jumble sales
A jumble sale is a charity event at which second hand goods are sold. They are usually held on a Saturday. You can buy clothes, baby equipment and smaller household items. Check the notice-boards in local community centres, church centres, schools, etc.
Jumble sales are often advertised in the local papers on a Friday in the classified section.
Garage sales
This is a sale of household goods, usually held in the garage at the home of the seller. Typically the seller is moving house and wants to sell unwanted items.
Garage Sales are often advertised in the local papers in the classified section.
Car boot sales
Private individuals come together with a car full of items to sell (usually on a Saturday or Sunday). All the goods on sale are often used but no longer wanted personal possessions. Members of the public can attend these events and buy what they want.
Car boot sales are often advertised in the local papers in the classified section.
